Valkenburg aan de Geul: het perfecte startpunt voor een elektrische tour

Valkenburg aan de Geul: the perfect starting point for an electric tour

Why does Tour Electric always start in Valkenburg aan de Geul? Parking, charging, atmosphere, and location, this picturesque Limburg town is the ideal starting point for an EV day through the Ardennes.

There are many places in the Netherlands and Belgium where you can start an electric tour. But if you study the map, weigh the charging infrastructure, and consider the atmosphere, you always end up at the same spot.

Valkenburg aan de Geul. (South Limburg)

Why Valkenburg?

Valkenburg is less than ten kilometers from the Belgian border. The Ardennes begin almost immediately after the border crossing, no long highway drive to reach the beautiful roads. You get in, drive for fifteen minutes, and you're there.

But location is not the only reason.

Valkenburg has something that many starting points lack: character. The medieval city center, the castle ruins on the hill, the cobblestone streets, it immediately sets a special tone for the day. You don't drive away from a parking lot next to a highway. You drive away from a place that already has a story.

Parking

For a group of EV drivers, parking is no trivial matter. You need space, preferably close to the starting point and ideally with charging facilities nearby.

The Walramplein in Valkenburg aan de Geul meets all criteria. Spacious enough for a group of cars, centrally located and within walking distance of the starting location.

Charging before departure

Departing with a good charge is the basis for a carefree driving day. In Valkenburg and the immediate vicinity, multiple charging options are available for participants who want to start the day with a full battery.

At Tour Electric, we always advise: arrive at the briefing with at least 90% charge level. This way, you'll drive the first half of the day completely relaxed.

The perfect briefing location

A good briefing requires a good location. At Tour Electric, we start at a brasserie in Valkenburg, a location that immediately sets the tone for the day.

Tea, coffee, and pastries upon arrival. Time to meet the other participants. And then the briefing: route, GPX, charging plan, and what to expect along the way.

Only then do we depart.

From Valkenburg across the border

The route from Valkenburg to the Ardennes winds through South Limburg before the border crossing. Hills, sunken roads, small villages, it is actually already the most beautiful side of driving in the south of the Netherlands.

Immediately after the border, the landscape changes. The forests become denser, the roads narrower, and the elevation differences greater. The Ardennes have begun.

Maastricht as the endpoint

What begins in Valkenburg ends in Maastricht. The after-drinks reception is the culmination of the day, a cozy location in the heart of the city, with charging stations nearby for the return journey.

Valkenburg and Maastricht are less than twenty kilometers apart. Anyone who leaves their car at the start in Valkenburg can easily drive back after the drinks, or ride back with the group.

Want to drive the route yourself?

You don't have to wait for a Tour Electric event to drive this route. The route from Valkenburg via the Ardennes to Maastricht is also beautiful solo or with friends.

But if you want to drive the route with a pre-planned GPX file, a catered lunch, a group of like-minded EV drivers, and an after-drinks reception to conclude? Then the Ardennes Attack All-Electric Edition on August 1, 2026, is exactly what you're looking for.

Only a limited number of spots available.
