Organizing an EV drive day: how a Tour Electric event works

Organizing a driving day for electric cars sounds complicated. Planning charging infrastructure, mapping out routes, arranging stops, informing participants - these are all components that must align perfectly.

At Tour Electric, we have developed this process from start to finish. Here's how we do it.

Step 1: the route

A good driving day starts with a good route. Not the fastest, not the shortest, but the most beautiful. Roads that let the car do what it was built for. Bends, elevation changes, views.

At Tour Electric, we drive every route ourselves first. Multiple times. We test the charging infrastructure, check the stops, and drive at the pace participants can expect. Only when the route is finalized, do we export it as a GPX file.

The GPX file works on all common navigation systems, Tesla, Porsche, ABRP, Waze and Google Maps. During the briefing, we explain to participants step by step how to load the file.

Step 2: charging planning

Charging planning is the most technical part of an EV driving day. And the most underestimated.

A group of EV drivers has different cars with different ranges and different charging speeds. The route must be planned so that everyone, from the driver with a 250 km range to the driver with 500 km, can comfortably drive throughout the day.

Our approach:

• All participants start with at least 90% charge level
• We plan one fixed charging stop during lunch, long enough to recharge, short enough not to be boring
• Additional charging stops are included in the GPX for those who need them
• We only drive past fast chargers of at least 150kW

Step 3: the stops

A driving day is more than just driving. The stops are the social heart of the day, the moment when participants connect, share experiences, and admire each other's cars.

At Tour Electric, we choose stops based on three criteria: the location must be special, there must be space for the group, and at the lunch stop, charging must be possible.

A lunch at Van der Valk Verviers is a good example. Extensive menu, beautiful location, and fast chargers on site. While participants eat, the car charges.

Step 4: the briefing

The briefing sets the tone for the day. A good briefing gives participants confidence; they know where they are driving, how the GPX works, where the charging stops are, and what to expect.

At Tour Electric, the briefing lasts about 30 minutes. We cover the route, the stops, the charging plan, and answer questions. Afterward, everyone departs at their own pace.

Step 5: the after-party

A driving day never ends in the parking lot. At Tour Electric, we always conclude with an after-party, a moment to discuss the day, make new contacts, and already talk about the next tour.

The after-party is also practical: charging stations are always available at the final location so that participants can make the return journey with a full battery.
